Opening Ceremony

The 9th International Symposium on River Sedimentation (ISRS) organized by the Ministry of Water Resources, People’s Republic of China was opened on Oct. 18 till Oct. 21, 2004 at the site of the partially completed Three Gorges Project on the Yangtze River near Yichang of Hubei Province in China. A total of 450 scientists, engineers, researchers and decision makers from  40 countries, including officials from international organizations, government Departments and other organizations attended the symposium.

The ISRS is a triennial conference series initiated in 1980 by the Chinese Scholars and supported by UNESCO. Since then, eight such symposia have been held in Asia, America, Europe and Africa, respectively. The International Research and Training Center on Erosion and Sedimentation (IRTCES), being authorized by UNESCO, has served as the permanent secretariat for the organization of the ISRS. This Symposium is the pageant for the scientists and engineers from all over the world to exchange information and strengthen cooperation and friendship.

The Chinese government paid great attention to the 9th ISRS, Minister Wang Shucheng personally assumes the Chairman of Local Organizing Committee and Vice Minister Suo Lisheng is the Executive Vice Chairman.IRTCES, Changjiang River Water Resources Commission (CWRC), China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR) and Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society (CHES) are sponsor organizations of the Symposium.

Sediment problems in general, include those arising from land erosion, desertification, sediment yield, transport and deposition in reservoirs and lakes, process of river course, estuary and coast, and interactions between sediment and hydro projects and their impacts etc.

According to preliminary sediment statistics available for the world, the annual erosion of surface soil from river basins amounts to 60 billion tons. Due to soil and water loss, as much as 5 to 7 million ha of farmlands are annually ruined and about 1% of the previous storage capacity of the world’s reservoirs is annually lost to deposition.

Presently China has the total eroded area of 3.56 x106 Km2, accounting for 37% of the total territory of the country, with 5x109 of annual amount of soil erosion. The transport of large amount of sediment in the land surface and streams has brought significant influence to survival environments of human being, utilization of water and soil resources and socio-economic development.

With the advance in the development and utilization of water resources, increasingly more large hydraulic projects have recently built, for example, the large Chinese project of Xiaolangdi on the Yellow River and the colossal Three Gores Project being constructed on the Yangtze river. Large hydraulic projects with large reservoirs on sediment-laden rivers are bound to interact strongly with the river systems and thereby to affect their up-and downstream environments as well as with the riparian environment of their reservoirs through sedimentation process involved in flood control, power generation, water supply, navigation and others.

The theme for the 9th ISRS is “interactions between fluvial systems and hydraulic projects and pertinent environment impacts”. Under this central theme, six topics are suggested for in-depth discussion, namely large-scaled hydraulic projects and their impacts, river sedimentation, estuarine and coastal engineering, environmental problems in sedimentation, Soil and water and Sediment information.

More than 500 papers from 52 countries and regions have been received by the secretariat. The collection of papers covers a broad spectrum and reflects the vibrant research activity on erosion and sedimentation all over the world. 12 prominent experts will present keynote lectures on selected topics in the plenary sessions. 220 experts will present their current state of research in 6 parallel sessions. 46 papers will be presented at poster session. During the symposium, the technical tour will be organized to visit the Three Gorges Project as well as new immigration villages.

The successful organization of the 9th ISRS and the establishment of the WASER would be not only to strengthen friendship between scholars of various countries, but also to promote international exchange of information and cooperation in the field of erosion and sedimentation, to enhance capability of sediment research and to make contributions for conservation and utilization of soil and water resources and melioration of the ecological environment.
