Mr.
Y. Aoshima,
Director
UNESCO Office Beijing and UNESCO Representative to China, DPR Korea,
Japan, Mongolia and Republic of Korea
Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentleman,
Good morning,
On behalf
of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to this
International Training Workshop on Watershed Eco-environment and
Water Resources Management. On this occasion I would like to
congratulate International Research and Training Center on Erosion
and Sedimentation (IRTCES) for making excellent arrangements.
I am proud
to inform you all that UNESCO and IRTCES successfully have been
working together since more than 2 decades. At present UNESCO and
Ministry of Water Resources of China are in the process of renewing
the agreement on IRTCES to strengthen the cooperation in the field
of Water Resources Management.
This
training workshop is being organized as part of International
Sediment Initiative (ISI) of International Hydrological Programme (IHP)
of UNESCO. I would like to provide you with the background of ISI.
The ISI has been launched by UNESCO, as a major activity of the
current Sixth Phase (2002-2007) of the IHP.
The overall
objective of the International Sedimentation Initiative is to
promote and interact with activities that will result in;
-
Increased awareness of
sedimentation and erosion issues;
-
Improved and sustainable
management of soil and sediment resources and
-
Better advice for policy
development and implementation.
The present
training organized by the IRTCES aims to create technical
advancement in the field of erosion and sedimentation among the
specialists working in this field.
I learned
that there are 28 participants coming from 9 countries including
DPRK, Republic of Korea, Mongolia, Iran, Pakistan, Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and P.R. China. I sincerely hope that you
will learn the details of sedimentation and erosion issues; in
addition all of you will have some time to share your own
experiences in sediment management at your home country.
I would
like to thank IRTCES’s for its kind assistance in organizing this
training workshop, and also I would like to express my sincere
appreciation to Ministry of Water Resources, China for its financial
and technical support. I wish the training workshop a great success,
and all participants a pleasant stay in Beijing.
Thank you
very much.
