Dear Honorable Guests and Distinguished Participants;

First, I would like to express my great pleasure to address your distinguished participants and honorable guests. On behalf of my country Sudan, the African continent, the Arab World and on behalf of all my colleagues the participants from the 12 countries besides our Chinese participants, I am delighted to be here this morning to assist in the opening session of this workshop (Advanced Training Workshop on Reservoir Sedimentation Management organized by International Research and Training Centre on Erosion and Sedimentation (IRTCES), Ministry of Water Resources, People’s Republic of China and International Sediment Initiative of UNESCO-IHP) in the period 10 – 16 Oct. 2007, at IRTCES, Beijing- China. I really value the importance of this workshop for the effective and efficient water resources management (from the watershed to end users).

Dear Honorable Guests and Distinguished Participants;

I believe most of the people of the world and in particular the Africans do love the people of China. In Sudan we strongly believe that strengthening and deepening trade and economic relationship with China would significantly contribute to the healthy growth of our economy. As you are all aware, great advances have been achieved in the Sudanese-China partnership especially in the field of oil development in Sudan, where China is the biggest partner. Now, in Sudan, there is more than 20,000 Chinese working on different disciplines and areas of investments and they are all welcome. Therefore, I am delighted to stand in front of you today to say thanks to each and every one of you people of China for the generous help and assistance to our Country Sudan and other Countries in Africa and in the developing countries throughout the globe, without waiting for rewards.

Dear Honorable Guests and Distinguished Participants;

As many of you may know that the UNESCO-IHP launched the International Sediment Initiatives (ISI) in 2000 to serve as a forum for exchanging experiences and ideas to help finding practical mitigation measures for Sediment management at local, national and global levels.

One of the ISI activities we are proud of is the ISI conference event which was held last November, 2006, in Khartoum-Sudan. Over seventy (70) countries and international organizations participated in the Conference. By all measures the Conference was successful and categorized as of top quality and high standards. We received many letters of thanks and appreciations on this regards. I believe this workshop is a continuation to the ISI series of activities in the direction of increasing the awareness and participation on the integrated sediment management issues worldwide.

Dear Honorable Guests and Distinguished Participants;

I would like to thanks the workshop Organizers for giving me the opportunity to participate and deliver a presentation. Moreover, I would like to thank the hosting institute IRTCES (International Research and Training Center for Erosion and Sedimentation). It gives me great pleasure as a Governing Board member of IRTCES representing the Arab Region Countries to visit it, since my election in Paris last year. I am going to deliver a presentation during the course of this workshop dealing on Sudan Experience with Sediment. I wish you successful workshop and informative lectures from reputable experts and professionals on this field.

With Thanks and Regards
