Abstract

Study of hydraulic parameters effects on the flow pattern in lateral intakes is important to be identified from different aspects. For instance, it enables us to assess sediment transport to intake easier. The transverse pressure gradient near the intake induces regions of mean-velocity gradient, depth-varying surface of flow division and separation zone in the vicinity of lateral intakes. Therefore, it affects on the diversion discharge. In order to exclude or minimize sediment inflow to the lateral intake, a lot of research has been done. This is limited to the study of straight channels and meanders with a large radius of curvature. However, in this paper, experiments were carried out in an 180ْ U-shaped bend flume with rectangular cross-section. Experiments were designed to understand variation of hydraulic parameters with different diversion angles, intake location as well as Froude Number (Fr). During the experiments, it was found that Fr, intake location and diversion angle could be the effective parameters on the diversion rate.
