Abstract
The proper
management of sediment yield requires a sound estimation of sediment reaches a
particular control point at a certain time. Till date, most of the sediment
control measures have been adapted regardless of spatiotemporal variations of sediment yield in
river basins led to over or under design of structures which ultimately directed to waste money and time. Studying spatial and temporal
variations of sediment yield is therefore necessary to be accurately taken into
account for integrated watershed management. In the present study, an attempt
has been made to study the temporal variation of sediment yield in daily basis
at the mouths of some important rivers in Haraz watershed
in order to draw a real picture of sediment yield in the study area. The water levels were recorded
manually at least once a day at 14 PM for one year and suspended sediment was
also simultaneously sampled using one liter bottle. The results of the
study verified significant variations in both the study variables. The minimum
and the maximum sediment values have been recorded for months of August and April. It
was also found that the subwatersheds located at
central part contribute more than other lower and upper subareas.
According to the
results obtained during the study, the proper decisions can
therefore be made for optimal utilization of Haraz
water resources. The more appropriate and efficient structures can also be
selected and implemented in order to reduce sedimentation problems in the area.
