Distinguished Guests,Ladies and Gentlemen,

On behalf of IAHR I would like to wish the officers of this new association every success in being able to fulfil its aims and ambitions,and to express the willingness of IAHR to collaborate with WASER to the benefit of the water community.

The establishment of WASER today provides a new focal point for the promotion of sediment research.By embracing all disciplines involved in sedimentation WASER aims to be able to take a more comprehensive approach to solving sediment problems.In doing this,however,we ask you not to lose sight of the long established organisations such as IAHR which are your roots.In particular,we ask you to work closely with us to ensure that our respective activities are co-ordinated so that they complement one another,and not least to ensure that sediment research does not become"compartmentalised"away from the other domains of hydraulics and water resources engineering and research which are the "bread and butter"of IAHR.

I would like to invite WASER,therefore,to actively participate in the sediment activities of IAHR - for example in the forthcoming IAHR Biennial conference in Seoul in September 2005!
