Invitation to ICEC-2006

It is my great pleasure to invite you to attend the Second International Conference on Estuaries & Coast (ICEC-2006), to be held in Guangzhou, China from Nov. 28 to 30, 2006.
Estuaries and Coastal regions are commonly the developed and populous area in economy and culture. With the economic globalization and hi-tech development, people are paying more attention to the evolvement and rational exploration of estuarine and coastal areas for achieving harmonious between Human-being and Nature and sustainable development. Under the circumstances, the ICEC-2003 was held successfully in Hangzhou, China in Nov. 2003. More than 100 academicians and scholars from 33 countries and regions took part in the ICEC-2003. During the conference, most participants wished to make this important event regular and serial.

The central themes of ICEC-2006 is ‘Advance the Estuarine and Coastal Engineering Research to Enhance the Ecological Environment’, including four topics: Estuarine and Coastal Processes, Estuarine Eco-Environment and Its Protection, Maintenance and Management of Waterways in Estuaries and Harbors, Research Technologies for Estuarine Engineering. The ICEC-2006 will provide a forum for information exchange of latest research and prospecting future for worldwide academicians, scholars, engineers and decision makers in this field.
The Pearl River Delta, where stands Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macao and Shenzhen, is one of the most complicated deltas in the world and has unique hydrological characteristic of "Three Rivers Inflow, Eight outlets to sea". I hereby genuinely invite all friends who concern Estuaries and Coasts to come to Guangzhou and experience this flourishing and historic Delta.
I am sincerely looking forward to seeing you at ICEC-2006 in Guangzhou in Nov. 2006.

Preface

Estuary and Coast have distinguished geographical advantage in rich shipping and soil resources, which provide strong support to local economic and cultural development. Estuarine and coastal areas are commonly the most developed and populous regions. With the economic development, how to get along with natural environment and maintain the sustainable development of economical society has gained more and more attention from all social parties.
At present, many estuarine areas are suffering from wastewater made by industrial, agricultural and daily-life. Red tides frequently emerged. The environment of estuary and coast is enouncing serious problems. The increasing demands in freshwater, along with seawater intrusion often causing serious situations, appeal to utilize water resource in a more rational and reasonable way. An efficient and effective warning and protection system is to be designed to prevent the estuary area from the typhoon-caused disasters. The evolution of estuary and coast is a colligation result of water, sediment and environment factors. However, irrational exploitation will accelerate the degradation of estuary environment that human beings rely on. The research in estuary, coast and environment is urgent to be deepened.
ICEC provides opportunities to exchange latest research results in this field for worldwide academicians, scholars, engineers and decision makers. ICEC-2003 was successfully held in Hangzhou, China, there were more than 100 attendees from 33 countries and regions.
ICEC-2006 will be held in Guangzhou, the central city of Pearl River Delta, China, 28-30 Nov. 2006. The Pearl River is a great river flowing through south China. As one of the most complicated deltas, Pearl River Delta has unique hydrological characteristic as
"three rivers inflow, eight outlets to sea". The attendees of ICEC -2006 will experience the complication and diversity of estuary and coast in the Pearl River Delta.
ICEC-2006 is organized by the International Research and Training Center on Erosion and Sedimentation (IRTCES) and Pearl River Water Resource Commission, P. R. China and sponsored by Pearl River Hydraulic Research Institute.

Guangzhou

Guangzhou is the capital city of Guan Dong Province, which is the center of economic, culture, technology and transport in South China. In Shui-Tang dynasty, more than 1400 years ago, Guangzhou was the departure port of the Silk Road on the sea and created splendid culture of South-Mountain. Guangzhou is also called "City of rams"and "City of rice ears". Guangzhou is located in the subtropics South Asia with oceanic monsoon climate and evergreen vegetation, being called as"City of flowers". Guangzhou offered its contribution to Chinese modern history. Nowadays, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macao and Shenzhen and etc. have built up Pearl River Delta Economic Circle. Guangzhou is a historic, friendly, beautiful and vigorous city. The weather in Guangzhou is pleasant in November, with an average temperature of around 20 ℃.

Pearl River Estuary

The Pearl River Delta is an alluvial plain of West River, North River and East River. The delta is covered by complicated river network. The Pearl River flows into the delta and pour forth to ocean through eight outflets, forming "three rivers flows in, eight outflows flow out". This estuary is one of the most complicated flow-sediment interaction regions in the world. The Pearl River Delta is also one of the most flourishing and developed area with particular geographic advantage. On the Pearl River Delta stand many large and middle cities such as: Hong Kong, Macao, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Dongguan, Foshan, Zhongshan and Jiangmen.
